Although there are some students who do benefit from taking such exams, there are others who do not and Old Dominion realize that there are many students who will benefit from taking an ACT or SAT essay and a WTA or ACT writing or essay test.According to Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Nathan Jacobs, 'As a merit-based school, we want our students to be academically prepared, and we don't want to be in the business of teaching how to write a paper. We want to be in the business of providing students with a solid foundation in critical thinking and high-quality instruction, and helping them to become responsible, educated adults.'Therefore, the curriculum provided is set up so that students will be able to produce their own essays and retain the information needed to research, write, and then revise the essay for the exam. It is a very different approach from traditional classroom teaching that requires students to absorb knowledge through lectures and written works.After the forum about SAT and ACT essays, the admissions office discussed their views on this topic and the feedback received showed that most Old Dominion students agree that ACT or SAT writing assessments are not required for admission. Old Dominion recognizes that ACT or SAT writing assessments are not required for admission, but they also realize that the exam's content areas are complex, and that they would be ignorant of the content areas if the tests were required.So does Old Dominion really require students to take SAT or ACT writing or essay tests? Of course, it is not necessary.
